About the Department

THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1991. It had its first graduates in 1995. Master’s Degree Programs have been ongoing since 1997. In 2009, the first students were admitted to the Ph D Program.

The Department of Civil Engineering consists of 4 divisions: Structure, Geotechnics, Hydraulics, and Transportation. There are sufficient number of faculty members in each division. The period of undergraduate study is 4 years. In the first two years of this period, the student takes mathematics and mechanics courses required for basic engineering knowledge. In the 3rd and 4th years, vocational courses are given in structure, hydraulics, transportation and geotechnical engineering, which are the basic branches in civil engineering.

The Civil Engineering Department has laboratories where the requirements for education are met adequately and scientific studies can be carried out at world standards with the contribution of the projects supported by Erciyes University Research Projects Unit, DPT and TUBITAK. These are Earthquake Research, Building Materials, Soil Mechanics, Hydraulics and Transportation laboratories. Earthquake Research Laboratory has the characteristics of the newest laboratory which can experimentally demonstrate the behavior of one-to-one scale structures under earthquake loads, is similar to its equivalents in Turkey and has more opportunities than many others. In these laboratories, undergraduate students are encouraged to do many of the experiments they will encounter during their professional life in accordance with the standards, and the importance of quality control and inspection mechanism is emphasized. In addition, MSc and PhD students actively use laboratories within the scope of experimental thesis studies.

According to the scientific publication performance of more than 4000 Universities and Research Centers in the world evaluated by the National Taiwan University (NTU) in 2014, the Department of Civil Engineering was ranked 1st in Turkey and 68th in the world in terms of "scientific publication performances".

It is a department the regular and evening education programs of which were accredited by the Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Programs (MÜDEK) as of 2012. This association is recognized by the Council of Higher Education as a national quality assurance institution for the accreditation of engineering programs. At the same time, since it is a full member of the European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education (ENAEE), it has the authority to issue the EUR-ACE (European Accredited Engineer) certificate. In short, it is a department that has received a quality certificate valid in national and international platforms. This accreditation provides our graduates with the recognition of their diplomas in many countries abroad.
